What we now call Ancient Greek literature, the Greeks called music. Masked actors sang the plays, and bards chanted the epics. So it’s one thing to read the classics, but another and truer thing to hear them as they may have been sung. Only a few fragments of ancient Greek music survive. But you can hear them, thanks to the Commission for Ancient Literature of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. This site offers a sampling of dramatic melodies and epic chants, sound samples from classical musical instruments, and even a guide to pronunciation of Ancient Greek. Let the music carry you back to a time of rosy fingered dawn and wine dark seas.
